Powering the Future Workforce: Introducing Destination Energy

Reading plans by a pylon

The UK’s clean energy transition is accelerating, but a growing skills gap threatens to slow progress. Energy & Utility Skills’ latest Skills Strategy estimates the power industry alone will need an average of 22,400 new people every year until 2030. This is a significant workforce challenge.

Destination Energy is a new initiative from Energy & Utility Skills, designed to attract talent, widen access and build the workforce needed to deliver net zero, starting with a national webinar series that brings the sector together.

Opening the door to new talent

This new campaign brings employers, industry bodies and government together to build a stronger, more diverse talent pipeline for the clean energy sector. It supports the wider Skills Strategy, placing workforce attraction, sector communications and career support at the heart of delivery.

Through a national webinar series, supported by social content and employer storytelling, the campaign is creating new ways for people to explore careers in energy. Focusing on people, not just vacancies. Graduates, career changers, skilled trades, digital professionals and those returning to work are all part of the approach. The aim is to show that clean energy offers far more than one traditional route, opening up opportunities across a wide range of roles and backgrounds.

A sector full of opportunity

From offshore wind to smart systems, hydrogen to retrofit, the range of roles across the clean energy sector is expanding rapidly. Many people still associate the sector with a narrow set of roles. In reality, it spans digital, engineering, project management, planning and more. Destination Energy aims to bring these opportunities into one place, making it easier for people to understand where their skills fit and how to take the next step.

A practical benefit for members

Destination Energy also helps employers make better use of existing Energy & Utilities Careers & Jobs membership benefits. As a member, organisations can access a sector-focused talent pool, promote vacancies and take part in wider recruitment activity, creating practical routes to turn interest into real hiring outcomes.

Stephen Barrett, Director of Membership and Strategic Engagement at Energy & Utility Skills, said:

“Meeting the UK’s net zero ambitions depends on people. Destination Energy brings the sector together to open up opportunities, break down barriers and connect talent with the careers that will shape our future.”
