National Occupational Standards (NOS) Review: Gas and confined spaces

Energy & Utility Skills is inviting industry experts to help develop and review standards for the energy and utilities sector.

As the industry skills body for our sector, Energy & Utility Skills will be reviewing a range of National Occupational Standards (NOS) during 2026-27. This aligns our sector‑wide standard‑setting work and the development of a comprehensive occupational map for the energy and utilities sector. Through clearly defined competency standards for key roles, it will help ensure the right skills are identified, developed, and maintained to meet current and future workforce needs.

NOS describe what an individual needs to do and know to perform a work activity, including the skills, knowledge and understanding required. They underpin qualifications, in house training programmes and apprenticeship frameworks across the UK.

The following NOS suites will be reviewed this year:

LPG Installation and MaintenanceHow to install, service, maintain and repair liquified petroleum gas (LPG) systems in industrial, commercial and residential properties and leisure accommodation in line with industry requirements.Gas
Downstream Domestic Gas Installation and MaintenanceHow to install and maintain domestic gas systems and appliances in line with industry standards to meet end user requirements. Please note – This suite also applies to Emergency First RespondersGas

Get Involved

To ensure the NOS consider the latest innovation and working practices in the sector, and are fit for purpose, we are inviting industry representatives who understand the technical aspects of the job roles associated with the NOS, including employers, training providers and professional bodies, to be involved in our reviews.

Virtual project review launch sessions which will provide an overview of the products under review are scheduled as follows:

The launch sessions will then be followed by a series of online industry workshops to review the products in detail throughout September and October, followed by public consultations issued later in the year.
