Network Construction Operations (Gas) Mains Layer

What is the Network Construction Operations (Gas) Mains Layer scheme? 

The Network Construction Operations (NCO) Gas Mains Layer scheme – also known as NCO (Gas) Mains Layer – is based on the completion of one of the following: 

  • EUIAS Level 2 Diploma in Network Construction Operations (Gas) 
  • City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Network Construction Operations (Gas) 
  • Gas Network Team Leader (GNTL) Apprenticeship, (Team Leader Mains Laying): Level 2. 
  • Gas Network Operative (GNO) Apprenticeship 

Registration as a Mains Layer on EUSR is for a period of 5 years. 

The information below shows the qualification and minimum units required of the Level 2 Diploma in Network Construction Operations (Gas) – Mains Layer for the Self-Lay and Distribution pathways. 

Evidence Requirements – EUIAS Qualification 

  • An EUIAS Level 2 Diploma in Network Construction Operations (Gas) – Main Layer qualification certificate 

Mains Layer up to 180mm (Self-Lay & Distribution): 

  • 1078 – Principles of health and safety in utilities network construction 
  • 1079 – Install equipment for safe working on the highway in utilities network construction 
  • 1080 – Locate and avoid supply apparatus for utilities network construction 
  • 1081 – Excavate and maintain holes and trenches for utilities network construction 
  • 1082 – Operate powered tools, and equipment for utilities network construction 
  • 1083 – Joint materials by electrofusion processes on utilities network 
  • 1094 – Conduct specified testing of gas network components and assets-mains 
  • 1095 – Conduct specified connections to gas network mains and commissioning
  • 1086 – Joint materials by butt fusion processes on utilities network construction, up to 180mm diameter 
  • 1096 – Install gas engineering products or assets up to 180mm 
  • 1097 – Decommissioning and abandonment of mains and services 63mm and above 

Mains Layer up to 355mm (Self-Lay & Distribution): 

All of the units listed above for 180mm plus: 

  • 1091 – Joint materials by butt fusion processes between 180mm and 355mm for utilities network construction 
  • 1107 – Install gas engineering products or assets above 180mm, up to and including 355mm 

Mains Layer 400mm and above (Self-Lay & Distribution) 

All units listed above for 180mm and 355mm plus: 

  • 1106 – Install gas engineering products or assets above 355mm 

Evidence Requirements – City & Guilds Qualification 

  • A City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Network Construction Operations (Gas) – Mains Layer 

Qualification certificate 

Mains Layer up to 180mm (Self-Lay): 

  • 201 Create an efficient and effective environment in utilities network construction
  • 202 Maintain a safe and secure working environment in utilities network construction
  • 203 Establish and maintain effective working relationships in utilities network construction
  • 205 Install equipment for safe working on sites for utilities network construction 
  • 206 Locate and avoid supply apparatus for utilities network construction 
  • 207 Excavate and maintain holes and trenches for utilities network construction
  • 209 Operate powered tools and equipment for routine and predictable requirements on utilities network construction 
  • 210 Join materials by electrofusion processes on utilities network construction 
  • 211 Joint materials by butt fusion processes on utilities network construction, up to 180mm diameter 
  • 214 Conduct specified testing of Gas network engineering products or assets – mains 
  • 302 Install gas engineering products or assets up to 180mm 

Mains Layer up to 180mm (Distribution): 

All of the units listed above for 180mm (Self-Lay) plus: 

  • 204 Install equipment for safe working on the highway for utilities network construction 
  • 216 Conduct specified connections to gas network mains and commissioning 

Mains Layer up to 355mm (Self-Lay or Distribution): 

All of the units listed above for 180mm plus: 

  • 212 Join materials by butt fusion processes on utilities network construction, above 180mm diameter or 
  • 306 Joint materials by fusion processes on utilities network construction, above 180mm diameter 

and 

  • 303 Install gas engineering products or assets above 180mm or
  • 309 Install gas engineering products or assets above 180mm, up to and including 355mm 

Mains Layer 400mm and above (Self-Lay or Distribution) 

All units listed above for 180mm and 355mm plus: 

  • 308 Install gas engineering products or assets above 355mm 

Evidence Requirements – GNTL Apprenticeship 

An Institute for Apprenticeships & Technical Education – Gas Network Team Leader Apprenticeship certificate – (Team Leader Mains Laying): Level 2 

The GNTL Apprenticeship (Mains Layer) provides the following EUSR registration: 

  • Mains Layer 180mm (Distribution) 
  • Mains Layer up to 355mm (Distribution) 

Evidence Requirements – GNO Apprenticeship 

  • An Institute for Apprenticeships & Technical Education – Gas Network Operative Apprenticeship certificate – Level 2 

The GNO Apprenticeship provides the following EUSR registration: 

  • Mains Layer up to 180mm (Distribution)

All individuals must hold a valid EUSR registration for SHEA Gas.
