Innovative Ways of Working Report

Energy & Utility Skills Group has published the Innovative Ways of Working Report, developed through collaboration across the electricity transmission and distribution supply chain.

Produced as part of the Electricity Transmission Industry Skills & Workforce Planning Programme, with input from 21 organisations across the sector, the report explores how innovation can help unlock workforce capacity and support delivery of future energy infrastructure.

As demand grows across energy security, net zero and infrastructure investment, the findings highlight that workforce challenges cannot be addressed through recruitment alone. They also point to the need for existing skills and expertise to be deployed more effectively through new delivery models, technologies, processes and ways of working.

Three innovation pathways are identified as already delivering benefits across the sector:

• automation, robotics and mechanisation
• standardisation and modularised build
• digital tools and artificial intelligence
