Heat networks are expected to play a central role in decarbonising heat in homes, public buildings and industry. As demand increases, so does the need for technicians with the right safety critical and technical skills.

The Heat Network Maintenance Technician apprenticeship, now approved for delivery in England, represents an important step toward developing the skilled workforce needed to support the UK’s net zero commitments. In a sector facing rapid growth, this apprenticeship represents a timely and essential step in strengthening workforce capability. While the apprenticeship is delivered in England, the wider heat network sector is expanding across all four nations, and the capability it builds will contribute to strengthening the UK’s overall energy transition.

Purpose-built training, shaping the future technical workforce

As the first provider to deliver this apprenticeship, South & City College Birmingham has invested in specialist facilities to ensure apprentices gain hands-on experience with equipment that mirrors real-world systems.

Toby Powell, Operations Director at Hemiko and Chair of the Trailblazer Group, said:

“The approval and launch of the Heat Network Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship marks a major milestone for the UK heat networks sector. As the first programme of its kind, it creates an exciting pathway for new talent to enter a rapidly growing industry that will play a critical role in delivering the UK’s net zero ambitions. Beyond addressing the UK’s green skills gap, initiatives such as this will help raise standards across the sector and further enhance the quality of service provided to customers. South & City College Birmingham is the first institution to deliver this apprenticeship, and we are already in discussions with other colleges nationwide looking to follow suit. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the development and approval of this qualification, and I wish every success to the apprentices who will help shape the future of our sector.”lighted our apprentices’ hard work has paid off. Their success really demonstrates the business case for offering apprenticeships… This new standard and the successful completion by 15 of our team will enable our business to progress with a more qualified, highly trained and efficient workforce. I am extremely proud of their achievements.”

The wider impact: responding to national skills demand

The Energy & Utilities Skills Strategy 2025–2030 emphasises the growing need for technical and engineering capability across energy systems. Heat networks are one of the fastest-expanding areas of low-carbon infrastructure, and this apprenticeship reflects the collaboration and leadership required to meet future workforce demand.

Rachel Thomas, Managing Director of Energy & Environment Awards, said:

This apprenticeship is a powerful example of what happens when employers, providers and industry partners come together with purpose. Heat networks are critical to the UK’s long-term decarbonisation plans, and this new apprenticeship ensures we are building the skilled, future-ready workforce the UK’s energy transition plans demand.”

The scale of opportunity is significant, with heat currently accounting for around 37% of the UK’s total emissions, heat network investment estimated at up to £80 billion by 2050, and demand for reliable, low-carbon heat rising rapidly in towns and cities.

Driving forward with partners across the UK

The Heat Network Maintenance Technician apprenticeship demonstrates the sector’s commitment to growing capability, improving service quality, and accelerating progress toward net zero. With more providers expected to adopt the apprenticeship, and employers signalling strong demand, this marks a major step toward building a resilient, highly trained technical workforce.
