Following the completion of the industry procurement process, responsibility for the Standard Setting Body (SSB) function for the downstream gas industry will transfer from Energy & Utility Skills Group to the Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers (IGEM) from 1 April 2026.

Paul Cox, Group Chief Executive of Energy & Utility Skills Group, said:

“We are proud of the standards, partnerships and industry collaboration developed during our stewardship of the SSB function. Working alongside employers, industry bodies and partners, this work has helped strengthen competence and safety across the downstream gas sector.

We congratulate IGEM on their appointment and look forward to working closely with them to ensure a smooth and well supported transition for industry. IGEM is also an endorsee of the Energy & Utility Skills Partnership 2025-30 Skills Strategy and we remain committed to continuing our collaboration to support the future workforce of the sector.”

Energy & Utility Skills Group will continue to support the gas sector through competence, training and assurance activities. These include the Group Competence Scheme, Safe Control of Operations Scheme, recognition of training for IGEM/IG/1, our role as the CSCS Alliance Partner for the sector, the Network Construction Operations registration scheme, National Occupational Standards and end point assessment delivery.

These activities remain central to maintaining a safe, competent and skilled workforce across the gas sector, and to supporting industry as it prepares for the wider workforce demands facing the energy, water, and waste sectors.
